Meetings with E. Y. Genieva and L. E. Ulitskaya

On April 28–29 meetings with Ekaterina Genieva, General Director of the All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature named after M. I. Rudomino (ARSLFL), and writer Lyudmila Ulitskaya will be held at the invitation of National Library of Udmurt Republic, as part of the humanitarian project “Ex Libris: Libraries of the ХХI Century”.

The humanitarian project “Ex Libris: Libraries of the ХХI Century” launched in autumn 2013 is aimed at overcoming the shortage of library resources and at transforming regional libraries into Russia’s major cultural and intellectual centers. Apart from providing books to libraries, the project also involves arrangement of meetings between librarian communities, readers and notable writers and cultural figures; digitization of books; connection of provincial and rural libraries to digital resources of the ARSLFL and — via it — to resources of other major libraries and library associations of the world.

The events within the “Ex Libris” project have already taken place in Ulyanovsk, Kaliningrad and Leningrad Oblasts, Kemerovo, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Kursk and Oryol. Udmurtia’s libraries are expected to receive 32 book sets, each comprising 75 items of fiction and children’s literature. Many of the donated books are bilingual (in Russian and some foreign language). When compiling the book sets, “Ex Libris” coordinators observed the most important historical and jubilee dates of 2014: 100 years since the start of the World War I, M. Y. Lermontov’s 200th anniversary, the 450th anniversaries of William Shakespeare and Michelangelo.

Udmurtia’s librarians and culture workers will be presented with the project by one of its initiators — General Director of the ARSLFL Ekaterina Y. Genieva — outstanding scientific and public figure, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, member of the Public Council for Culture under the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Vice President of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), member of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO. At the meeting set for 10 am, April 28 (Park Inn by Radisson, conference hall — Izhevsk, Borodina St., 25) E. Y. Genieva is delivering the lecture “Borges — the Great Librarian”. On April 29 E. Y. Genieva is going to visit the Ilyinskaya rural library (Udmurtia, Malopurginsky district) and to give there a lecture “The Library of the ХХI Century” for librarians of Malopurginsky, Sarapulsky, Zavyalovsky and Kiyasovsky districts.

Another active participant of the “Ex Libris” project is one of the most notable contemporary Russian writers Lyudmila E. Ulitskaya, laureate of many prestigious Russian and international literary awards. In 2007 she founded “Lyudmila Ulitskaya’s Fund” for support of the humanities initiatives. Within one of the projects realized by the Fund — “Good Books” — Ulitskaya personally selects books for distribution among libraries; in 2007-2010 the writer initiated issuing of the series of children’s books on cultural anthropology “Other, Others, Otherwise”.

Readers’ meetings with Lyudmila Ulitskaya will take place on April 28 at 12.30 pm at the conference hall of Park Inn by Radisson and at 15.30 pm at the assembly hall of the Udmurt State University. At the end of the meetings admirers of Ulitskaya’s talent will be invited to attend the autograph sessions.

The meetings will be accompanied by the book exhibitions “Ex Libris: Libraries of the ХХI Century” displaying the newly donated books and “Literary Guide” dedicated to Lyudmila Ulitskaya’s talent.

All are welcome to attend.
