National Library of Udmurt Republic in the Internet Project “Radishchev. Journey from Petersburg to Siberia”

The National Library of the Udmurt Republic has taken part in the educational Internet-project of Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library (Saint-Petersburg) "A. N. Radishchev. A Journey from Petersburg to Siberia".

In 2015 the most famous work by the Russian writer A. N. Radishchev "A Journey from Petersburg to Moscow" marked 225 years. The book was banned immediately after publication and Radishchev was sentenced to banishment in Siberia.

To mark the jubilee of the book monument, Tomsk Regional Center of Boris Yeltsin Presidential Library initiated the project aimed at re-tracing Radishchev’s route to Siberia and describing interesting facts about his stops along the Siberian Route and building the virtual simulation tour along Russia of the 18th century as viewed by Radishchev.

The project has resulted in the union electronic corpus of regional bibliographic products developed by the largest libraries of Siberia, the Volga and Ural Regions, including the National Library of the Udmurt Republic.

The 'Udmurt" part of the interactive map is accessible at the web-site of the project "A. N. Radishchev. A Journey from Petersburg to Siberia". Radishchev’s travel notes feature a lot of facts and impressions on visiting Udmurt, Russian and Tatar villages located on the old Siberian Route (presently – the territories of Glazovskiy, Debesskiy, Igrinskiy, Seltinskiy and Sumsinskiy Districts). The resource also features bibliographical lists provided with links to the full-text materials.

As agreed with Tomsk colleagues, the work started within this project will be continued in 2016 with the development of other sections – "Udmurtia in the Late 18th Century", "Perpetuating the Memory of Radishchev in Udmurtia", "A. N. Radishchev in Udmurt Literature and Art". The materials for the project are selected and prepared by librarians of the Center for National and Local History Literature and Bibliography, Digitization Division, Automation and Maintenance Division.
