Isaak Ilyich Levitan was one of Russia’s most influential painters of the 19th century, master of landscape and founder of the "mood landscape" genre in which nature is spiritualized and richly imbued with poetic associations, reflecting conditions of human soul and “so finely depicting our gloomy skies, mournful birch trees, silvery rivulets, quiet sloughs, wide boundless fields, wild ravines” (A. Y. Golovin).
