New Books on History of Russia During World War I

From August 3 to 31 Readers Service Division of National Library of Udmurt Republic (Udmurtskaya St., 199) is staging the exhibition “The Last War of the Russian Empire (1914–1918)” displaying books published to WWI centenary. 

2014 marked 100 years since the start of the First World War. To commemorate this landmark occasion a number of new research papers, monographs, encyclopedias, biographical dictionaries, collections of archival documents have been published by the leading archival and academic institutions (Russian State Archive, Russian Military and Historical Association, Institute of Russian History of the Russian Academy of Sciences). All these recent publications are on display at the exhibition of new arrivals “The Last War of the Russian Empire (1914–1918)”.


Among items on display are the series “Russia in WWI 1914–1918” comprising the four-volume political encyclopedia “World War I in Evaluations of Contemporaries: Authority and Russian Society. 1914–1918”; the two-volume publication of St. Petersburg University “Russia and WWI Strategy”; unique materials from the collections of the Institute of Russian Literature (the Pushkin House)WWI in Oral and Written Culture of Russian Peasants”: recollections and letters of peasants and Cossacks – the participants of military campaigns; texts of songs and humorous rhymes, examples of soldiers “protecting” magic, musical scores.


Among other interesting items on display are the monograph by A. S. Tumanov “Public Organizations of Russia in WWI (1914 – February 1917)”, the encyclopedic dictionary “WWI” published by the Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences and a fundamental large-format encyclopedia in three volumes “Russia in WWI. 1914–1918” comprising biographical articles about all military and political leaders of the Russian Empire, command of army and fleet, prominent public and political figures, chronology of military action and the home front, numerous archival photographs.
