“The Book as Artwork” Exhibition

On May 21 at 4 pm Center of National and Local History Literature and Bibliography of National Library of Udmurt Republic is hosting the exhibition “The Book as Artwork” timed to the Day of Slavic Written Language and Culture.

The exhibition demonstrates a selection of elaborately designed books from the collections of Division of Rare and Valuable Documents and Center of National and Local History Literature and Bibliography of National Library of Udmurt Republic pertaining to the history of publishing art, typing techniques, methods of image reproduction (xylography, lithography, medal engraving, phototype, line-process blocks). Among items on display are book monuments of XVII-XIX centuries, the "fine" books of XIX–XX centuries, notable examples of the Soviet book publishing industry.


The exhibition also features papers on theory and history of book art, on craft of page construction, book decoration and binding (by G. Knoblokh, Y. Gerchuk and other experts). Also on display is a stunning selection of miniature books.


The exhibition opening address will be delivered by head of eparchial Division of Religious Education and Catechism of Izhevsk Saint Michael's Cathedral, archpriest Andrey Petrov. Associate professor in the Department of Design, Institute of Arts and Design, Udmurt State University Aleksandr V. Fertikov will outline the basics of printing art. Head of “Anigma” Publishing Nigmadzyan M. Aglyamutdinov will share his expert insights on the process of miniature books production. The opening ceremony will also feature vocal performances by students of the Udmurt Republic’s Musical College.
